Love it.
Anemone americana, or Hepatica americana - Round-lobed Hepatica are one of the first spring ephemeral flowering perennials to bloom in the spring in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Around the the 1st of April, these tiny clusters of light purple flowers start to emerge from the forest floor. I often see them in the uplands around streams and rivers.
Spring-flowering ephemerals are herbaceous perennial flowering plants that stick around for a short time. They go dormant and disappear from view shortly after they stop flowering. The first hint of warm weather triggers their growth, but they don't last very long. Ephemerals quickly die back on top while their roots continue growing under the soil, conserving energy for the following year.
Captured in Shenandoah National Park along the Jones Run Trail in early April.
